Enhanced Treatment Care

Nutritional Modulation & Healthcare Screening

At Central England Specialist Referral Centre we pride ourselves on providing pioneering advanced treatments to our patients using the most advanced equipment and materials whilst applying evidence-based healthcare decisions to our treatment planning. Treating patients as a whole rather than simply the mouth. Healthcare screening and nutritional modulation optimises your treatment outcomes. In 2022 we introduced nutritional Modulation and Healthcare Screening to;

  • Boost healing and repair,
  • Enhance current treatments,
  • Optimize the response to treatment
  • Improve outcomes for patients.

What is nutritional modulation and healthcare screening?

  • Nutritional modulation – enhances your healing, repair, and regeneration through supplementing your diet.
  • Holistic Health Care Screening – Blood pressure screening, Omega 3 balance, Vitamin D, and HbA1c (blood glucose) testing.

Diet can affect healing following surgery and periodontal treatment. Healing, repair, and regeneration all rely on good cell health.Molecular and cellular mechanisms are involved in bone regeneration in periodontal treatment, surgery and in the placing and integration of dental implants (Gruber et al., 2017). Recent studies suggest that a wide variety of dietary components, including macronutrients and micronutrients, are integral for optimal periodontal health and have the potential to accelerate oral wound healing. (Lau et al., 2013). Nutritional modulation may help reduce inflammation (e.g., antioxidants) or avoid nutritional deficiencies associated with periodontitis (e.g., vitamins C and D, omega 3).

With implant treatment studies have found a significant association between increased vitamin D levels and the number of bone cells present therefore healing may be more pronounced when serum vitamin D levels were improved. (Fretwurst et al., 2016).

A recent review of human studies  (Luo et al., 2018) concluded that omega 3 fatty acids had a positive role in the prevention of periodontal disease due to their antioxidant and immunomodulatory effects and can lower levels of inflammation associated with periodontal diseases. They are also beneficial in diseases characterized by active inflammation (Asthma, rheumatoid arthritis, Crohn’s disease, endometriosis, type 2 diabetes, inflammatory bowel disease, heart disease, cancer)

Supplementation of omega-3 fatty acids can be an easy way to improve treatment in the short and long term in people with periodontitis. A recent review suggests that a blood test at the beginning of periodontal or implant treatment can be beneficial.

We have Teamed up with a company called Zinzino to help ensure our patients have access to good quality nutritional products. Zinzino provide the opportunity to test our patients and to identify exactly what nutritional supplement you need; they also allow us to retest your results to ensure the optimal results are being met. Many people like Dr Wilson have been taking over the counter supplements routinely for many years however, when tested they can still be significantly deficient. Zinzino are so confident in the quality of their products that they actively recommend testing to see the improvements gained over other over the counter supplements.

My treatment has finished, can I still take the supplements?

Nutritional modulation can benefit anyone at any stage of treatment so even if you have already started or had your treatment and are in the maintenance phase you can still start taking supplements. The supplements are also beneficial to our general health and in diseases characterized by active inflammation (Asthma, rheumatoid arthritis, Crohn’s disease, endometriosis, type 2 diabetes, inflammatory bowel disease, heart disease, blood pressure and cancer).

How long do I need to take the supplements for?

We recommend a six-month subscription ideally to be started before treatment. Following both implant treatment and periodontal treatment there is an initial healing phase. During this healing phase optimal cell health will have a positive effect on treatment. With periodontal treatment the evidence suggests that healing can take place up to six to nine months (Badersten et al., 1984).

Following implant treatment the initial healing phase will occur within 6 weeks, following this there will be repair and then regeneration. Six to twelve weeks after placement large amounts of newly formed bone and bone to implant contact will be achieved. Adequate vitamin D and calcium are critical for proper bone repair. The time for remodelling stage varies depending upon individuals but usually requires months from the time of surgery (implant placement) (Lang 2019). It would be therefore sensible to maintain supplementation for the period of at least 6 months although there can be long lasting general health benefits to sustained supplementation so there is no need to stop.

Here is a testimonial from one of our very first patients to undergo nutritional modulation.

“I just wanted to take the time to provide a review on the Balance oil and vitamins that I have been taking. I have recently had surgery at Central England Specialist Referral Centre, and it was important to try to ensure that I was doing everything possible to aid the healing process.

Dr Wilson suggested a trial of the Zinzino Balance oil as the main focus with the additional support of the vitamins. I had initial blood tests taken to establish my baseline levels. I was so shocked to learn how unbalanced these levels were to the point I questioned how I was functioning!!! Anyway, I started on the oil and vitamins immediately to try to rectify these levels in preparation for my next operation. Within only a few weeks I noticed a significant change in my hair and skin. I have always suffered badly with eczema particularly on my hands. I have had to use steroid cream and prescribed moisturisers multiple times a day, but I am so happy to say I haven’t used them at all since starting the oil and vitamins.

After my bone graft operation I honestly feel the healing process was much quicker than I had anticipated, and the current results are very reassuring. For me, the focus remains to try to keep balanced levels to support my future operations and implants.

I have always been sceptical about supplements, but I honestly can’t recommend them enough. My honest opinion is that if you are investing in your dentistry needs with Central England Specialist Referral Centre then why would you not invest in the extra support these supplements provide to achieve optimal results aided by your own body support system? I will be continuing to take these supplements moving forward. Thank you for the recommendation, Dr Wilson!”
