How Keeping Our Mouth Clean Can Extend Our Life

Monica Campos Gallego heads up our hygiene team here at the Centre and frequently shares research and articles with the team here at the Centre. Here is a recent article that Monica shared that caught the attention of our hygiene team.

I recently read an interesting article in the Spanish Newsletter “El Pais” where a Danish biologist was stating ‘Keeping your mouth clean is one of the few easy things you can do to extend your life’, which attracted my attention. Nicklas Brendborg, a 27-year-old molecular biologist at the University of Copenhagen in Denmark, explains in his new book The Immortal Jellyfish, the latest findings on humanity’s long-standing quest for longevity.

On top of explaining possible new medicines to prolong our lives, he marks the easy things to do such as: do not smoke, do not drink, eat in moderation and exercise, which, in my opinion, is not an easy combination to achieve. He also points that “because we can see correlations between pathogens of the mouth and then the development of cardiovascular diseases and dementia, it is pretty easy to prevent these bacterial infections by removing the food in which they breed from the mouth. People who get inflammatory conditions of the mouth have an increased risk of getting blood clots, getting dementia, or dying early”

“After feeling very anxious prior to my appointment, I left CESRC feeling much happier and in very safe and competent hands. Every member of the team that I came into contact with were kind, reassuring and helpful. The experience of the team was obvious from the word go and I would highly recommend this practice! Thank you!”
